~ Pete Read ~ Whitetop Mountain Band ~
Bournemouth Folk Club, Centre Stage ~ 25th September 2008
After a brief introduction by Bournemouth Folk Club host Paul Burke, popular Bournemouth based guitarist, Pete Read opened the evenings entertainment.
Performing the first part of his acoustic americana style set accompanied by his acoustic guitar, Pete later introduced melodies skillfully played on his Harmonica, which added a vibrant element to his music.
Performing four songs, including music written by Bob Dylan & Henry Thomas, & the classic 'Across The Borderline', Pete engaged the audience with experience & style.
A very enjoyable set, performed with ease, encompassing lovely vocals & clear lyrics.
Pete Read provided the perfect welcome & opening to lead on to the Whitetop Mountain Band.
After a short interval, Whitetop Mountain Band were introduced & led by Thornton Spencer to the stage.
Providing such an extroadinary mixture of styles & techniques, from beautiful & perfectly excecuted three part harmony gospel style songs & old time mountain music, to bluegrass, honky tonk, blues & purist instrumental fiddle tunes, the five piece band amazed the audience time & time again.
A very jovial, lively & communicative set, steeped in American Music History & early Whitetop Mountain Band days, originating in the times of Albert Hash.
Creating their unique sound using acoustic Guitar, Banjo, Mandolin, Fiddle & Double Bass, & expressing themselves with such sincere, vocally perfect, lyrics, the Whitetop Mountain Band endeared themselves to the audience & received countless long applause.
Performing totally to their audience, they evoked real musical spirit & passion as members of the audience happily clapped & danced.
Each band member so in tune with the next, it was clear that they are a close musical family & for the Whitetop Mountain Band, their music is a way of life.
The audience were totally thrilled with displays of native Flat Foot Dancing by Martha Spencer & Debbie Bramer.
The band included old classic Carter Family tunes, including 'Green Fields of Virginia', old favourites such as 'Mule Skinner Blues' & infiltrated such laid back instrumental solos from Banjo, Mandolin & Fiddle to their performances, they really did leave the audience hanging on every note.
Such lovely people & genuine musicians with real talent, who gave a heartwarming & fantastic performance & brought their music all the way from the highest 'Whitetop' Mountains of Virginia, USA, to Bournemouth Folk Club.
An absolutely fantastic night of entertainment, which left everyone buzzing with energy & the anticipation of their next visit.
Another sincere recommendation to visit Bournemouth Folk Club & experience the best live music shows in the south.
